Visit by John Timu

John Timu came and talked to Pod 4 last Thursday about being an All Black.  He first became an All Black at the age of 20 when he replaced John Kirwan while they were on tour.  John played 50 matches for the All Blacks, 25 of these were test matches.  He played for the All Blacks for 5 years and then changed codes,  playing Rugby League for New Zealand.  John brought in a French, South African, Australian and All Black jersey, and a hat that all players are given when they first become an All Black.  He told us a couple of funny stories, one how he had his shorts pulled down as he was going over the line for a try.
Thank you for coming in John - we really enjoyed listening to you and learnt a lot.

New Zealand Culture

To begin our Rugby World Cup unit we have been looking at Culture - and what we think of when we talk about the culture of New Zealand.  We looked at things like: jandals, fish and chips, warm summers, paua, koru, wine, rugby, All Blacks, sport, gumboots and the buzzy bee etc.  After much discussion we came to the conclusion that this was all Kiwiana.
We then looked at what could be the culture of Wanaka.  We came up with things like the mountains, fun, skiing, swimming, lake, clear skies etc. We decided to design a flag that could represent the culture of Wanaka.
Here are a couple of ideas that we came up with:

Upper Clutha Cross Country

Today, Thursday, 11 August was the Upper Clutha Primary School Cross Country.  It was held at Hawea camping ground on a beautiful sunny day.
Room 15 did extremely well in both the Year 4 races.

Space

For inquiry this term we are looking at the planets.  Our Pod are busy making trading cards at the moment.  The front has a picture and the name of the planet and on the back there are at least five facts about that planet.  Included in those five facts is a 'Fun Fact'.  The 'Fun Fact' is something that we found interesting about the planet.
Some are making a few special cards.  These will be highly sort after to make a whole set.  To get these we will need to be able to answer questions to see if we have knowledge on these topics.
It will be interesting to see who gets them.
Some examples of some of our trading cards.

Winners for Nude Food Day - Thursday, 2 June 2011

After surveying all classes on Nude Food Day, Rooms 2 and 23 came out as the winners. Both of them only had four wrappers in their lunch boxes in total.  Here they are enjoying their prize of a platter of fresh fresh.

WELL DONE GUYS - WE ARE PROUD OF YOU

Social Action

Our inquiry topic last term was Zero Waste. Once we finished, we decided that one way we could take action would be to hold a Nude Food Day at Wanaka Primary School. This was held on Thursday, 2 June 2011.
“What is Nude Food?”
Nude Food is bringing a lunch along to school in your lunch box, completely wrapper free.
Why hold Nude Food Day?
This was to encourage less waste in our school environment and hopefully this will also encourage people to begin to use less waste at home as well.
This is a great way to celebrate us all taking responsibility for the health of our planet.
Rooms 2 and 23 both had the least number of wrappers (four in total for each class) and they won a fresh fruit platter each to share among their class. The fresh fruit was donated by Mediterranean Wholesale Market, Wanaka to whom we would like to say thank you very much.

The Crumbling Old House

The sky is as grey as the school in the olden days. Bright blue spots appear to be pushing their way through the misty grey barrier of cloud. The sky drifts past as slow as a snail. Sea waves crash upon the white island. Waves of the deep blue sea seem to be imprisoning the house in a cage. The crumbly old house seems lonely sitting by itself in the corner of the island, sobbing its heart away. The glare from the house looks like an ice cube compared to the sky. The land appears like an ice desert because it is so bare and deserted. The odd whispy tree hides the house in its cage of waves. Washed up pieces of wood and shells lie there on the shore, untouched and broken.

Wanaka A & P Show Art

This year we have two swan plants in our classroom and are eargerly watching the caterpillars grow and change.  This is an amazing process so we decided to work this around our Show art this year.
First we ruled our page into three pieces.  We then picked one part of the life cycle and drew this same picture into two of the spaces.  One we left as a sketch and the other we coloured with pastel.  Finally, in the remaining space we drew another part of the life cycle, also leaving this as a sketch.
You will see our work if you look at the slide show above this post.
Hope you enjoy our awesome creations.

Welcome Back

Welcome back to all the students and families in Room 15 this year.  We have a busy term ahead and hope to share our learning and achievements with you all.
We are all pleased to be back in our new school and to catch up with everyone that we didn't see over the holidays.  Everyone seems to have grown, must be all that good sunshine we had over the summer.
